Working for yourself

If you want to be your own boss, choose the hours you work and be fully rewarded for your own effort, you will probably want to work for yourself. The big financial advantage is that you will reap the rewards if your business is successful. The downside is that if things go wrong, you will be responsible for any losses.

Before you set up in business, you will need to thoroughly research your idea or business proposition, considering set up costs, expected income, the market you want to enter, and where you are going to operate from. There is lots of advice available and workshops to help you find out about marketing, keeping accounts, the legal implications of business etc.

GOV.UK has recently replaced business link as the one-stop-shop for business advice and business start-up resources. Contained on the site are a number of resources to provide advice and guidance to those looking to become self-employed and those seeking to grow an existing business.

Whilst GOV.UK does not directly offer services to its users, it is a valuable signposting tool towards a number of other advice, training, and funding schemes available to UK residents.
