Housing and homelessness

If you are leaving the Armed Forces it is likely you will need to look for somewhere else to live. You should begin by getting as much information as possible about the things that will affect your choices. These include information on your housing options, what to do if you face becoming homeless, and what help you can expect if you are disabled.

A useful first port of call is the Joint Services Housing Advice Office (JSHAO). They provide housing information and advice to all Armed Forces personnel and their families.

The prospect of becoming homeless can be very worrying, especially if you have a family to think about.  It is therefore important for you to know about the help available from organisations both connected to the Armed Forces and in Civvy Street that exist to help people in this situation.

If you are disabled, there are organisations that can give you specialised assistance in finding suitable housing or with adapting your home.

Homelessness and ex-Service Support

Crisis

Crisis is the national charity for single homeless people. They provide services in a number of areas including help with housing, education and employment.

From 30th March 2011, they took over the work of Project Compass, which was set up to address the specific needs of the ex-Service community. Project Compass' work to date, along with the work of many other agencies, placed a spotlight on the challenges facing vulnerable veterans and instigated significant changes within the sector providing more support for those in need through charities and agencies working collaboratively to support the diverse needs of this group. However, with many more specialists operating in this space, it was decided that instead of duplicating efforts via Project Compass the greatest impact could be made by integrating the project into specialist agencies and organisations.
