What is citizenship?

Citizenship is about being a full member of the community you live in. This means knowing about and exercising your rights and your responsibilities. Just as you have responsibilities to be a good neighbour, to pay your taxes, obey the law and treat others fairly and without discrimination, you also have rights which you are entitled to. These can be the rights to vote, to healthcare and education, consumer rights when you buy something, the right to travel, the right to complain and to be protected by the law.

If you come from outside the UK and are settling here, you will need to prepare for citizenship by learning about life in Britain. Depending on the standard of your spoken English, you may need to take a citizenship test. To find out more about this, follow the link on this page and click on Nationality and Citizenship.
