Me as a consumer

Your rights when you buy new goods

When you buy something in a shop or market, you and the seller are making a legal contract.

The law states that goods must be:

  • of satisfactory quality
  • safe
  • fit for their intended purpose
  • be as described by the seller, or on the label or sign
  • undamaged unless pointed out by the seller at time of purchase.

Your rights when you buy second hand or sale goods

Your rights are the same as when you buy new goods. Sale goods can be sold with a defect. If this has been pointed out, you cannot ask for a refund.

Your rights when you buy goods over the internet.

Your rights are the same as when you buy from your local shops. Providing you buy from websites of UK-based companies, you will be covered by the UK consumer laws.
