Hello pal,

Being from a technical background, I'd recomend looking at the design side of things, autocad drawing for example. I'm an ex grunt myself and found things hard until re-training as an electrician, loads of work going. Im now in the last 6 months of my electrical engineering degree where ive discovered loads of options from design to project management. I also found it easier to work for a large organisation as they are more willing to fund you through these courses while paying you a wage at the same time.

Hope this helps as Ive found nothing much helpfull on this website,

Dave

Hello bazmorg

Well, it's been nearly two years since your post in 2007, so I'm hoping that you've had some joy by now . I left the Regs(Army) in 1990 and found it very tough in Civvy Street. It does take time, but getting the right job/career is not just about qualifications out here, but your ability to network with the right people and use all available sources to market yourself. It sounds a pain as all this effort was never needed in the forces but it's a fact of modern 'civvy' life that we have to get used to...you know the old adage: "overcome, adapt, survive". Still, having said this I am unemployed at the moment , but am waiting for a CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) check to go through before starting a healthcare apprenticeship at a local hospital.  I can think of worse jobs than working in the NHS, at least it is doing some good for people. I applied for the NHS in early November and heard that they like ex-Forces provided you show willing and say all the right stuff in the forms and interviews. Money for old rope for many of us.

If there's a small chance that my CRB lists me as a 'crim' then I'll have to consider other training and funding and apply for a grant. Cerco provide some quality computer courses which I might seriously consider yet.

Failing this then there's always pan-bashers wanted. LoL Like the German "mojos" we used to get in the cookhouses in BAOR. Nah, surely it hasn't come to that has it!!!

Ah Marigold..

Good to see there are more users on this facility, can`t say I`ve noticed it`s been nearly 2 years since my first post but where does time fly....

Since then I`ve had my up`n`downs but I have been back in full time employment since the beginning of last year, albeit not a "glamorous" job, shall we say,but in this current climate and lack of qualifications I guess it`s a regular "pay cheque"...

Good luck on your CRB check by the way as they are a joke but to get through the miles of red tape you have to go along with it?...

I keep telling myself to go out and get better qualifications but I guess I`m stuck in a rut, somewhere between the comfort zone and reality...

But surely pan-bashing in some deepest, darkest cook-house in BAOR would give you the motivation not to look back...

Take care and good luck

Hi again Bazmorg

You're in a job now - cool! There should be a law against unglamourous jobs for people like us. We have done our bit and more and still this country doesn't give a s*** about us once we've left. OK, it's better than it was when I left in the nineties, but when I see the likes of some twenty year old racing driver getting paid humongous amounts for driving unbelievably fast cars-and being awarded an MBE then I know there is something sadly wrong. This country is f***** now!

Anyway, talking of the CRB...it's been two months now since it was submitted and I still haven't heard anything. I checked their website and it's in the final stage. Some privatised, silly civvy organisation that have the gaul to charge you money for the check and do not operate a freephone number when you make enquiries.  Do I sound bitter! Not in the least!
