Hi there,

My name is Pete and I am leaving the army in 8 weeks after 18 years of service.  I would like to hear from anyone who has made this transition especially those who have moved abroad.   I have heard that the British Legion have helped some people and also SSAFA have also helped people.  Would anyone be able to advise me on what type of help they give.

Look forward to hearing from you,

Pete

Pete,

Welcome to the site and well done to your 18 years service but most of all good luck to you when you walk out them gates

I`m not sure how long this site has been running for,but there doesn`t appear to be too many users as of up till now

I come out late eighties myself and there probably wasn`t as much help then as there is now,so I just got on with things, but as I`ve mentioned in my post have hit a mid-life crisis and trying to find something to change my life

Anyway I don`t know about resettling abroad but I`m sure with your service record you should have no problems making the move

I`m sure your resettlement officer can give you the information required,if not,I don`t know if this site has links for the British Legion and SSAFA but personally I`ve found them a great help with one or two problems and I`m sure they`ll endevour to help yourself

The British Legion and SSAFA do actually have their own sites,so you`ll find all the information you seek on them which also give you links to many military or ex military sites

Pete, all`s I can offer yourself is the best of luck and hope you make the right move

P.S...AP  THE  `AMMERS!!

Pete

Welcolm to Civvy Street. I am Ken Parkinson the manager of the civvy street service and an ex-Service man myself.

Sorry as they say this is the technical bit - Civvy Street is a resettlement, learning and work - information, advice and enhanced support service

The Royal British Legion is the organisation behind civvy street with SSAFA being one of the main partners contributing to its development. The legion provides a number of direct learning and work services to help the service leaver and dependants and a number of holistic services to assist with any resettlement problems. I suppose the question is what help do you want with your resettlement that this site not provide either directly or as a signposting service to meet your needs? I would welcolm any suggestions to make it better and more relevant

Hi Pete / West Ham Man,

Hopefully you have by now made the jump and emigrated somewhere nice?  I did my CTW course in Dec 07 and no-one mentioned this site (moderator - take note), but found it by accident when looking on BritLegion website for other info.

Anyway, reason for writing is that I leave later this year (after 33yrs service in R Signals) and emigrating to New Zealand - so rather hoping you may by now be able to answer your own original question!??  Do you have any advice or suggestions to make the move easier, or any help you got from Army or UK-side?  I am doing a lot of research and have struck up email links with NZ Recruitment Agencies and others, but so far nothing substantial I can report back.

If anyone else is looking to emigrate to New Zealand or Australia, I am building a bit of a network of ex-services who may be able to help you.  Just let me know by direct email at cutforth@armymail.mod.uk.

Best of British,

Phil C
